For anyone who grew up playing with Lego, the Lego factory is something like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. It’s not a place you can visit just like that, but the people at Gizmodo have gotten an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the inside of this temple dedicated to the best toy in the world.
The tour consists of three videos, and starts with the warehouse where the raw plastic pellets are stored and fed into the molding machines through a complex system of tubes and conveyor belts. After that, they take a look at the molds themselves, wich are actually a very closely guarded secret, so don’t count on seeing them yourself in real life.
The molds are followed by a truly amazing piece of technology: the storage “cathedral”. What’s so amazing about this? It doesn’t involve any human intervention! Boxes are stacked by robots controlled by a mainframe. In fact, most of the factory is operated by robots. I guess robots are for Lego what Oompa Loompa’s are for Willy Wonka! Check out the video’s in the Gizmodo article, it’s really amazing.
