Cheap cartridges come in several types. There are generic cartridges, wich are made by other manufacturers than the original one, but are compatible with a certain brand. Some manufacturers state that using such cartridges will void your warranty, though. If you want to use generic cartridges, it’s best to get a printer that has its printing heads built into the cartridge and not the printer, so your printer won’t be ruined if the printing heads get damaged. Remanufactured cartridges, on the other hand, are brand-name cartridges that have been refilled. You can buy these, have your own empty cartridges refilled or even try to do this yourself (keep in mind, it’s messy!).
The quality of cheap cartridges is quite good these days, but it depends mostly on the cartridge itself and the ink used. If you get remanufactured cartridges, you’re at least sure it’s a good cartridge. Sometimes, though, you can get less pages out of a cartridge, so how much you’ll save in the end is something you’ll have to find out for yourself.
