In a previous post, I have explained my opinion about the iPhone. I’m quite sure it will be too expensive, loaded with features nobody will use and, let’s face it, it’s too big for a cellphone. Take a look at the following picture:
Imagine putting that in your pocket. It’s too big, period! Besides, with such a huge display and nothing to protect it, I don’t think it will take long before it gets damaged. But, as I mentioned, it will probably be a huge succes anyway, and the people at Scifi Tech seem to share my opinion.
Here’s why they think it will succeed no matter what. Other manufacturers offer a wide range of products. Companies like Samsung, Nokia and Motorola offer dozens of different cellphones, and it can be confusing to choose one. The same goes for other equipment, like digital cameras. What it essentially comes down to is that they offer a few high-end models, and then a lot of tuned down, mediocre ones.
Apple, however, is planning to design and sell one phone. Well, they will be selling one with eight gigabytes of memory and one with four, but for the rest it’s the same phone. With that approach, it’s a lot easier to choose. One model with all the features, period. You are assured you get the best product, even if that means paying more.
If the iPhone is a succes, who knows what Apple’s next move may be. The iCamera? The iToaster? Or perhaps even the iHome? It seems like Apple is moving away from the computer business and is slowly turning into a high-tech gadget company.
